Ukraine may need about 72 mln doses of COVID vaccine for next two years – head of National Immunization Technical Advisory Group

KYIV. Aug 27 (Interfax-Ukraine) – For the next two years (2022-2023), Ukraine may need about 72 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine, predicts head of the National Immunization Technical Advisory Group Fedir Lapiy.

"We discussed that in 2022 and 2023, Ukraine needs about 72 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine in total. This figure is very approximate," he said in an exclusive interview with Interfax-Ukraine.

Lapiy noted that "this does not mean that we buy them – this is a possible need."

"We calculated that if by the end of the year we cover 50% of the population with vaccinations, then to reach 70% in 2022, it will be necessary to vaccinate 20% of the population. This figure will be taken into account when planning the state budget and in possible negotiations with manufacturers," he said.

Lapiy noted that if a decision is made to regularly vaccinate children over 12 years old, this may require about 3.5 million doses of the vaccine.

He clarified that this is not only about the Pfizer vaccine, the instructions for which provide for the possibility of vaccinating children from 12 years old. "We are talking about a vaccine, the instructions for which provide for the possibility of use for children," he said.
