Moldova to buy Russian gas at $790/1,000 m3 in Oct

CHISINAU. Oct 1 (Interfax) – Moldova will import Russian gas at a price of $790 per 1,000 cubic meters in October until a new gas supply contract is signed with Gazprom, Moldovan Deputy Prime Minister and Infrastructure Minister Andrei Spinu told reporters.

The current contract between Moldovagaz and the Russian gas giant expired on September 30 and negotiations on its extension have not been completed yet.

"In this situation the parties agreed to extend the contract on the previous terms. This means that a hybrid price will be used that is set with a peg to Germany’s NCG hub. In September the price was $550 per 1,000 cubic meters, in October the price will be $790," Spinu said.

"Until the completion of negotiations with Gazprom and the determination of the final price, the rate for consumers will remain unchanged. Subsequently we will take measures to protect socially vulnerable parts of the population in order to compensate part of their expenses. We are studying the issue of having the current high gas price in October be compensated at the expense of Moldovagaz," Spinu said.

He also denied reports that the Moldovan government is not involved in the negotiations on the terms of gas supplies. "The government has been actively participating in this process since the beginning of August. I spoke with Gazprom head Alexei Miller twice by telephone. Next week I’ll be in St. Petersburg, where a global gas forum will be held. I hope that I’ll manage to meet with Mr. Miller in order to discuss the terms of extending the contract. We’re doing everything possible in order to secure the most favorable prices," Spinu said.

The current contract, which was signed in 2006 for five years and then extended annually, expired on September 30. Moldovagaz CEO Vadim Ceban told Interfax earlier that negotiations are being held with Gazprom.
