US Senators pushing to boost shipments of lethal weapons to Ukraine
WASHINGTON. Nov 25 (Interfax-Ukraine) – U.S. Senators Republican Rob Portman and Democrat Jeanne Shaheen are pushing to boost shipments of lethal weapons to Kyiv amid reports of a buildup of Russian troops along the border with Ukraine.
Portman and Shaheen are proposing to allocate $350 million to the Pentagon in fiscal 2022 to provide military assistance to Ukraine.
Their proposed defense budget amendments increase military aid to Ukraine by $100 million over the amount requested by the Joe Biden administration.
It is proposed to allocate $125 million of this amount compared to the previous $75 million for the purchase of “lethal” funds.
“I urge the administration to provide further assistance in the form [of] anti-air and anti-armor capabilities which will be vital to deterring this latest Russian threat,” Portman said a statement.
“We must do all we can to stand with our ally Ukraine at this time,” he said.
“I urge the Senate to vote on an amendment I am offering with Senator Jeanne Shaheen to the FY 22 National Defense Authorization Act that would increase the overall amount of assistance to Ukraine and mandate a higher percentage be spent on lethal assistance,” Portman said.
Earlier, the CNN television channel, citing informed sources, said the administration of U.S. President Joe Biden is considering sending military advisers and weapons to Ukraine due to the buildup of Russian forces along the Ukrainian border.
