Ukraine needs to rely on institutions to 'regulate oligarchs' – US Charge d'Affaires
KYIV. Nov 18 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Ukraine needs to rely on institutions to regulate oligarchs so that all businessmen adhere to the same rules, U.S. Charge d’Affaires in Ukraine Kristina Kvien has said.
Kvien told reporters in Kyiv on Thursday that the piece of advice on regulating oligarchs is to use institutions that require all businessmen to adhere to the same rules to make sure oligarchs adhere to those rules. For example, she said, the Antitrust Committee could be a powerful tool to curb oligarch abuse. The courts, if they are acting properly and fairly, could be a method to ensure that oligarchs are held accountable if they do not adhere to the law, she said.
Therefore, Kvien added, the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine is trying to focus on strengthening the institutions that the U.S. uses to deter its businessmen and to make sure they adhere to the law.
