Ukraine cuts steel production by 8.5% in Dec y-o-y, climbing to 13th place in Worldsteel rating

KYIV. Jan 26 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Based on the results of the work of metallurgical enterprises in December 2021, Ukraine reduced steel production by 8.5% compared to the same period in 2020, climbing from 14th to 13th place in the ranking of 64 countries – the world’s main producers of this product compiled by the World Steel Association (Worldsteel).

According to Worldsteel data released on Tuesday evening, Ukraine ranked 14th overall for 2021.

In December 2021, an increase in steel production was recorded in most countries of the top ten, except for China, Turkey and Brazil. The Russian Federation in December maintained the volume of production at the level of December 2020.

The top ten steel-producing countries in December 2021 are as follows: China (86.190 million tonnes, a decrease of 6.8% compared to December 2020), India (10.383 million tonnes, an increase of 0.9%), Japan (7.934 million tonnes, 5.4% more), the United States (7.246 million tonnes, 11.9% momre), Russia (6.570 million tonnes, 0%), South Korea (5.975 million tonnes, 1.1% more), Turkey (3.325 million tonnes, 2.3% down), Germany (3.140 million tonnes, 0.1% more), Iran (2.790 million tonnes, 15.1% more) and Brazil (2.609 million tonnes, 11.4% down).

They are followed by Taiwan (China, 2.040 million tonnes, an increase of 6.9%), Vietnam (1.970 million tonnes, an increase of 1.5%), Ukraine (1.743 million tonnes, a decrease of 8.5%), Italy (1.499 million tonnes, a decrease of 6.9%) and Mexico (1.460 million tonnes, 3% down).

In general, in December this year, steel production decreased 3% compared to the same period last year, to 158.743 million tonnes.

In 2021, the top ten steel-producing countries was the following: China (1.033 billion tonnes, a decrease of 3%), India (118.134 million tonnes, an increase of 17.8%), Japan (96.334 million tonnes, an increase of 14.9%), the United States (86.012 million tonnes, an increase of 18.3%), Russia (75.970 million tonnes, an increase of 6.1%), South Korea (70.556 million tonnes, an increase of 5.2%), Turkey (40.360 million tonnes, an increase of 12.7%), Germany (40.066 million tonnes, an increase of 12.3%), Brazil (36.039 million tonnes, an increase of 14.7%) and Iran (28.460 million tonnes, a decrease of 14.7%).

This is followed by Italy (24.4 million tonnes, an increase of 19.7%), Vietnam (23.560 million tonnes, an increase of 4.8%), Taiwan (PRC, 23.250 million tonnes, an increase of 10.9%), Ukraine (21.366 million tonnes, an increase of 3.6%) and Mexico (18.4 million tonnes, an increase of 9.5%).

In 2021, 64 countries produced 1.912 billion tonnes of steel, which is 3.6% more than in 2020.
