Since start of war borscht in Ukraine rises in price by 21% – BRDO
KYIV. Jan 17 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Analysts from the Better Regulation Delivery Office (BRDO) have calculated that since the start of the full-scale Russian military invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, and as of January 13, 2023, the cost of a serving of borscht for four people, averaged in all regions of the country, has increased by 21.2%, to UAH 99.2 from UAH 81.84.
According to its website, when calculating the "borscht index," it used data from the Ministry of Finance of Ukraine on average monthly food prices, while not taking into account data from regions of Ukraine under Russian occupation and places of active hostilities.
According to BRDO, the most expensive borscht ingredients went up in price: for pork to UAH 167.21 per kg (63.7% more since the beginning of the war), sour cream to UAH 40.26 per 100 grams (32% more), and carrots UAH 25.6 per kg (26.5% more). A significant increase in the cost of meat products is due to the cost of animal feed, a decrease in livestock, as well as problems in the energy sector that negatively affect the ability of producers to store both raw materials and finished products.
In turn, compared to February last year, beets fell in price to UAH 11.93 per kg (48% less), cabbage to UAH 13.17 per kg (46% less), and potatoes to UAH 14.87 per kg (32% less).
BRDO said that when calculating the "borscht index" they were guided by a dish for four people, which requires 400 grams of pork and beets, 500 grams of potatoes and cabbage, 150 grams of carrots and 100 grams of sour cream.
