Saakashvili's doctor insists on transfer to multidisciplinary clinic in Tbilisi

TBILISI. Nov 19 (Interfax) – Former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili is in serious condition, Saakashvili’s personal physician Nikoloz Kipshidze told reporters early on Friday morning.

"Mikheil Saakashvili is under medical observation in an ICU. […] In my opinion, he should be urgently transferred to a multidisciplinary clinic. For instance, there is need for a brain MRI, but the prison infirmary does not have such equipment. Only a handful of clinics in Tbilisi have MRI systems. By the way, the military hospital in Gori does not have one," Kipshidze said.

Another reason why the former president should not be transferred to the Gori hospital is that about 25 medical specialists of different specialties are needed to maintain his health, Kipshidze said.

"All those specialists live in Tbilisi. How can they be transported from Tbilisi to Gori on a daily basis? That’s complete nonsense," he said.

Saakashvili may pass out again at any moment, and that is fraught with irreversible consequences in certain cases, Kipshidze said.

Meanwhile, the ruling party Georgian Dream said that a decision on the possible transfer of the ex-president to a multidisciplinary clinic would be made within hours, after consultations with leading specialists.

"Consultations with leading medical specialists are in progress. They will draw up a plan of action to deal with the new problem detected in Saakashvili’s condition. The patient will receive all necessary services. If he needs a transfer from the prison hospital, the decision will be made within hours, following consultations with doctors," Georgian Dream deputy David Sergiyenko said at a press briefing.

In turn, Health Committee Chairman Dimitri Khundadze said that Sergiyenko and he had met with doctors in the prison infirmary.

"The health condition of Mikheil Saakashvili requires attention, but it is not catastrophic, it is now stable. He remains under medical observation," Khundadze said.

It was reported on Thursday that Saakashvili fainted and fell down after a meeting with lawyers. Resuscitation efforts stabilized his condition.
