President of Northern Macedonia: Western Balkans – vvulnerable link in architecture of European security, in addition to Ukraine
KYIV. Jan 17 (Interfax-Ukraine) – President of Northern Macedonia, Stevo Pendarovski, called the Western Balkans as a vulnerable place in the architecture of European security due to possible influence from the Russian Federation.
President Pendarovski said at the World Economic Forum in Davos that the Kremlin poses a danger to the stability of the region.
“There are two sensitive points in the region — Republika Srpska and the north of the Republic of Kosovo, where attempts are being made to undermine the integrity of these countries. Apart from Ukraine, the Western Balkans are a vulnerable link in the European security architecture, and NATO and the EU should pay attention to this,” he said.
The President of Northern Macedonia explained that over the past year, Russian fake news, propaganda and "hybrid threats" have not intensified, because Russia was fully engaged in countering the Western alliance because of the war in Ukraine.
However, in his opinion, if Russia tries to divert the West’s attention from Ukraine, the Western Balkans region is more at risk than the Baltic states.
He also pointed out that it is necessary to maintain European and transatlantic unity and solidarity even after the end of the war in Ukraine.
