Potential threat of Russia's offensive from territory of Belarus to persist for a year – AFU General Staff

KYIV. Jan 12 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The potential threat of an offensive by the Russian armed forces from the territory of Belarus will persist for a year, Deputy Head of the Main Operational Directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), Brigadier General Oleksiy Hromov has said.

The 2023 Union Shield joint military drills of Russia and Belarus are planned to be held in the territory of Belarus, and at the same time, it is planned to conduct the 2023 West maneuvers of the Armed Forces of Russia and Belarus instead of the 2023 Center exercises, he said at a press briefing hosted by the Military Media Center on Thursday.

"A feature of these events is that in both cases a Russian group of troops will be deployed in the territory of Belarus, which can be used for appropriate actions. Based on the above, during the current year, the potential threat of an offensive by the Russian Armed Forces from the territory of Belarus will remain. Currently, no measures to form a strike force by the enemy to resume offensive operations from the territory of Belarus are observed," he said.

Hromov also noted that the enemy has activated rail transportation along the state border of Ukraine. Thus, the movement of the aggressor’s units to Belarus continues for restoration of combat capabilities. Also, the movement of units of the Russian Armed Forces from Belarus, which have been undergoing combat coordination at training grounds since October 2022, continues.

In addition, the AFU General Staff stressed that the restriction on flights of all types of civil aircraft, including unmanned aerial vehicles, in the south of Belarus has been extended until April 1.
