Poll in Hungary on EU sanctions against Russia not able to change European Union’s stance – Borrell's rep

KYIV. Jan 16 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The EU is familiar with the results of the national consultation in Hungary on the attitude of citizens to sanctions against Russia, but they remind that sanctions are approved by all EU countries by unanimous decision, said Peter Stano, spokesman for the head of European diplomacy Josep Borrell.

Stano said at a briefing in Brussels on Monday that they talked about this consultation, as well as about the low turnout at it. All these decisions [on the application of sanctions to the Russian Federation], he said, were unanimously adopted by the member states.

He recalled that the EU had so far adopted nine packages of sanctions against Russia in connection with the Russian military invasion of Ukraine. Stano also noted that the 27 member states provide financial and military support to Ukraine, increasingly exerting pressure on the Russian Federation, and that they will continue to apply sanctions if necessary to respond to escalation from Russia.

Borrel’s representative continued that attacks against Ukraine are attacks against their values, adding that the next decision on sanctions in addition to the current ones would be taken unanimously by the 27 EU member states.

Last Saturday, the Hungarian authorities published the results of a national consultation in Hungary, during which about 97% of the participating citizens expressed disagreement with the EU sanctions against Russia.
