Parliamentarians of Ukraine and Latvia discuss further cooperation
KYIV. Jan 12 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Ruslan Stefanchuk, Speaker of the Latvian Parliament Edvards Smiltens and their colleagues in the legislative bodies discussed further cooperation.
"The contribution that Latvia makes to our common victory, we, Ukrainians, see, feel and are very grateful for it. Latvia has always been an ally of Ukraine and has demonstrated assistance at all levels. I am sure that further support will only increase," Stefanchuk said at a joint briefing with Smiltens after the meeting in Kyiv.
According to the press service of the Verkhovna Rada office, during the meeting they discussed support for Ukraine on the way to the European Union and NATO, Russia’s responsibility for the crime of aggression against Ukraine, issues of international isolation of the Russian Federation and strengthening sanctions against the aggressor country.
"The Latvian Seimas is one of the first parliaments in the world to support Ukraine at the level of very important political decisions, in particular, recognition of what is happening in Ukraine as genocide of the Ukrainian people and recognition of the Russian Federation as a terrorist state," the Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada noted.
In turn, Smiltens stressed that Russia’s aggression is an attempt to appropriate the right to use force as opposed to the force of law, and the entire civilized world should do everything to stop this destructive policy.
"We cannot allow the policy of destroying the entire civilization to destroy the defended human values and lead to chaos in the world. It is necessary to restore the force of law so that those who commit murders are brought to justice and punished accordingly. That’s why we support Ukraine. We wish you courage on this path and are ready to stand by your side until the end," Smiltens assured.
