Metinvest shows 'certain interest' in Hungarian metallurgical plant Dunaferr to increase iron ore at its mining plants
KYIV. Jan 12 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The mining and metallurgical group Metinvest is showing "certain interest" in Hungary’s largest steel producer Dunaferr (formerly ISD Dunaferr), which was part of the Industrial Union of Donbas (ISD) corporation.
As the press service of Metinvest told Interfax-Ukraine on Thursday, in response to a relevant request, the war had a great impact on the group and the entire metallurgical industry of Ukraine.
At the same time, the loss of control over the group’s enterprises in Mariupol led to a significant decrease in the domestic consumption of iron ore raw materials in the state, and the blockade of Ukrainian ports by the aggressor almost made it impossible to export iron ore by sea. As a result, Metinvest was forced to suspend or partially limit the work of its mining and processing plants, to send workers to idle time.
Meanwhile, in Hungary, the procedure for liquidation of Dunaferr, which was one of the largest and closest to Ukraine plants – consumers of coal and iron ore, began.
"Under such conditions, the Metinvest group considers it necessary to monitor the situation around Dunaferr. For Ukraine, a working plant can ensure not only the workload of mining and processing plants in Kryvy Rih, but also enable thousands of Ukrainians – employees of mining and processing plants – to receive a decent salary and care for their families, the budget of Ukraine – to receive additional tax revenues, and Metinvest – to continue to help the Armed Forces of Ukraine and civilians. In turn, Metinvest is perhaps the only company in Europe that, thanks to its successful geography and its own production of iron ore, can ensure the continuous workload of Dunaferr and save the plant from liquidation, and its workers from losing their jobs. That is why the group shows a certain interest in the Dunaferr plant," Metinvest’s official position explains.
Metinvest is a vertically integrated group of mining and metallurgical enterprises. The group’s enterprises are located mainly in Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhia and Dnipropetrovsk regions.
