Kyiv court rules to detain Yanukovych in absentia under case on shooting of rally participants

KYIV. Jan 17 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Kyiv court once again selected a measure of restrain in the form of detention for former President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych under the Maidan cases, the State Bureau of Investigations (SBI) has said.

"At the request of the SBI investigator, agreed with the Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO), the court selected a preventive measure in the form of detention for the former president of Ukraine in absentia," the SBI said on the Telegram channel on Tuesday.

According to the report, back in November 2021, the SBI completed its investigation into the crimes of Yanukovych and nine other officials during protests in 2014.

"It was established that due to the actions of this organized criminal group, 76 citizens died and more than 800 suffered bodily injuries of varying severity only during this period," it said.

At present, a preventive measure in the form of detention has been chosen in absentia for all ten suspects. The judge also set a deadline for the defense to familiarize themselves with the materials of the pre-trial investigation, after which the indictment will be sent to court.

The courts previously selected a measure of restraint for the former president of Ukraine in the form of detention in the cases of usurpation of power, the Kharkiv agreements, and desertion.
