Independent doctors recommend Saakashvili be transferred to multidisciplinary clinic
TBILISI. Nov 18 (Interfax) – A group of doctors serving as an alternative to the current medical panel and operating under the supervision of Georgian ombudsman Nino Lomjaria has reported the results of a medical examination of former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili that took place in the prison infirmary on November 16.
"Mikheil Saakashvili’s current state of health is now critical according to many of his vitals, so we believe that the prison infirmary is no longer capable of providing proper medical attendance to the critical patient," Dr. Giorgi Grigolia, a member of the group, said at a press briefing on Thursday.
He added that Saakashvili does not require resuscitation at the moment.
"As Mikheil Saakashvili’s hunger strike continues, his condition will worsen day after day. We recommend that he be transferred to a multidisciplinary clinic where he can receive comprehensive treatment," Grigolia said.
Eka Kherkheulidze, a co-leader of the opposition party United National Movement, said on Wednesday night, having visited Saakashvili at the prison infirmary, that his condition was "extremely serious."
"Mikheil Saakashvili’s blood pressure spiked today. He is having difficulty walking and is unable to keep his balance when he stands on his feet," Kherkheulidze told reporters.
