Erdogan, Putin discuss war in Ukraine, supplies of foodstuff to Africa

KYIV. Jan 16 (Interfax-Ukraine) – President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan held a phone conversation with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, during which they discussed Russia’s war against Ukraine, as well as grain and ammonia supplies, the Turkish news agency Anadolu reported on Monday.

"According to a statement made by the Presidency’s Directorate of Communications, the developments in the war between Russia and Ukraine were discussed. At the meeting, the grain corridor and ammonia export issues were also discussed, and concrete steps were discussed in the project of turning Russian grain into flour in Turkey and sending it to African countries in need," it said.

During the meeting, President Erdogan reiterated that Turkey is ready to undertake the task of facilitating and mediating for the establishment of a lasting peace between Russia and Ukraine.

In turn, the press service of the Russian president said that "in light of the Turkish side’s initiative and following the recent contacts in Ankara between the Russian and Ukrainian human rights commissioners, they touched upon the issue of exchanges of captives, above all injured ones."

It was the second conversation between Putin and Erdogan this year. The first one was held on January 5.
