Deputy PM of Ukraine, Head of NATO Representation discuss defense industry reform
KYIV. Aug 26 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine, Minister for Strategic Industries Oleh Urusky has said that he met with Head of the NATO Representation to Ukraine Alexander Vinnikov, and the parties discussed the defense industry reform in the country.
"I had an official meeting with the head of the NATO office in Ukraine, Alexander Vinnikov. We discussed the state of current cooperation and the process of reforming the Ukrainian defense industry. Alexander Vinnikov, for his part, welcomed the intensification of the defense industry reform in Ukraine and expressed the Alliance’s readiness to continue providing expert support in the implementation of reforms," Urusky wrote on his Facebook.
According to him, during the meeting Vinnikov said that Ukraine submit the country’s defense industry development strategy until 2030 to NATO this autumn.
"I said that there are two strategic goals for our state – accession to the EU and NATO. I believe that the integration of our country into the Alliance will precede accession to the EU. I am convinced that the reform of the defense industry will be of high quality and will not slow down Ukraine’s movement to NATO. After all, defense and industrial cooperation between Ukraine and NATO is an important component of integration processes," Urusky said.
On August 20, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky signed a decree, which put into effect the decision of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine on the Strategy for the Development of the Defense Industry of Ukraine.
Among the priorities for the development of the defense industry, the Strategy defines the technical re-equipment of the scientific and production base, the introduction of the latest technologies, the creation of rocket and space technology, high-precision weapons, electronic warfare, air defense systems, as well as military shipbuilding and helicopter construction. Innovative activity in the defense industry should be aimed at updating the production base, taking into account the latest achievements of scientific and technological progress and the transition to new types of specialization and organization of production.
The strategy will be implemented in three stages. At the first stage (2021-2022), it is envisaged to fulfill the tasks identified in the priority directions of the development of the defense industry, the development and approval of a comprehensive plan for reforming the defense industry. The second stage (2023-2024) provides for the implementation of projects and plans for the development of defense enterprises. At the third stage (2025-2030), the development of new technologies to reduce the use of imported defense products will continue. Diversification, technical re-equipment and development of the scientific and production base of enterprises of the defense industries will be also ongoing.
