Cement production in Ukraine down by 51%, consumption by two-thirds in 2022 – Ukrcement
KYIV. March 29 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Cement production in Ukraine in 2022 decreased by 51% compared to 2021, to 5.4 million tonnes, while its consumption amounted to 35% of the previous year, according to the data of the Ukrcement association.
“Eight enterprises of the association in 2022 produced cement of strategic importance for the country, which was primarily used at important construction sites of defense importance. The decrease in cement consumption led, respectively, to a decrease in production. At the same time, January 2022 was a record year for cement production, according to observations over the last six years,” Liudmyla Kripka, the Executive Director and Head of the Department of Scientific and Technical Information of the Ukrcement Association, told Interfax-Ukraine.
According to her, the export of products to the countries of the European Union made it possible to slow down the decline in production. Thus, over the year, the volume of cement exports decreased by only 3.7% and amounted to 935,000 tonnes, while the volume of imports decreased by 14.8 times – to 39,000 tonnes.
In the structure of imports last year, 46.5% was ordinary cement, 41.6% – white cement, 10.9% – other hydraulic cement, 1% – aluminous cement.
“The dynamics of cement exports in 2022 shows that Ukrainian producers have fully provided the domestic market and continued to support their production with supplies to other countries, mainly to the EU,” the expert noted.
In turn, Ukrainian enterprises produced 16 types of cement in 2022, among which the most popular were cement with slag. At the same time, producers continue to look for ways to increase the efficiency of composite Portland cement while reducing the proportion of clinker, which is one of the main factors in reducing CO2 emissions, Kripka emphasizes.
The association is also considering the possibility of using shredded construction waste from destroyed buildings (linoleum, carpet, polyethylene, rubber, wood, plastic, roofing material, etc.) for burning in cement kilns as an alternative fuel, which can reduce the need for energy.
