Border Guard Service's head, U.S. National Nuclear Security Agency NSDD program director discuss new joint initiatives introduction

KYIV. Sept 3 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The Head of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, as part of a working trip to Washington as part of an official delegation led by the President of Ukraine, met with Director of the Nuclear Smuggling Detection and Deterrence (NSDD) program of the United States National Nuclear Security Agency (NNSA) Andrew Vogue.

"During the meeting, the parties discussed further steps of cooperation and the possibility of starting new initiatives, including the development of the state border and the provision of equipment for units performing tasks in the exclusion zone," the press service of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine said.

Head of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine Serhiy Deineko said the Ukrainian side highly appreciates the cooperation with the NNSA.

"We are grateful for the help that our American partners provide us for effective and reliable protection of the state border and ensuring the fulfillment of tasks, in particular in eastern Ukraine. The Border Guard Service of Ukraine remains loyal to the goals that were previously declared, and seeks only to strengthen and expand cooperation with our strategic partners," he said.

Vogue, in turn, expressed the hope that the NNSA and the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine will continue to cooperate in the future to counter the smuggling of nuclear materials in order to be prepared for emerging challenges.

"The implementation of the program in Ukraine, which has been going on for more than 16 years, has brought great benefits to the security of both our countries and made a significant contribution to improving global security," he said.

It is noted that, within the cooperation between the NNSA and the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, only in 2019-2021, the U.S. partners provided international technical assistance worth more than UAH 325 million. In total, within the cooperation, radiation monitoring systems were installed at international checkpoints across the state border, airports and ports within Ukraine. The same systems are installed at the checkpoint on the border with the occupied territories. With the support of the NSDD program, the Training Center for Countering the Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction was established, which is part of the centers of the NSSC IAEA International Network. Another group of objects has been agreed with the American side, work on the installation of systems on which is planned to be completed by the end of 2021.
