Almost half of Ukrainians don't support idea of introducing dual or multiple citizenship – poll

KYIV. Dec 2 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Almost every second Ukrainian (48%) does not support the idea of introducing dual or multiple citizenship in Ukraine at all, at the same time, 24% of Ukrainians support the possibility of introducing dual (multiple) citizenship of all countries without exception for Ukrainians.

This is evidenced by the results of a nationwide sociological survey conducted from October 22 to November 12 by the Ilko Kucheriv Democratic Initiatives Foundation together with the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS), published on the Foundation’s website on Thursday.

It is noted that another 11% of respondents support this idea, if dual citizenship is allowed only with the EU and NATO member states, 7% may support the introduction of such citizenship with all countries except Russia; almost 5% support dual citizenship only with the former republics of the USSR.

Only 5% of respondents found it difficult to answer the question.

"As the analysis of the survey results says, there is no support for the idea of introducing dual (multiple) citizenship in the Ukrainian society today. It can also be assumed that the objection to such an idea is due to Russian aggression, including the forced passports issuance to Ukrainian citizens in Crimea and in the occupied areas of Donetsk and Luhansk regions. The respondents may fear that in the event of the unconditional spread of dual citizenship to all countries, Russia will take advantage of this for even greater influence on Ukraine," the analytical comment made by sociologists says.

The survey was conducted from October 22 to November 12, 2021 using the CATI method (computer-assisted telephone interviews) based on a random sample of mobile phone numbers in all regions of Ukraine, except for territories that are temporarily not controlled by the Ukrainian authorities: Crimea, some areas of Donetsk and Luhansk regions. The sample is representative of the adult population (age 18 and older) in Ukraine. As a result of the field stage, 2,003 questionnaires were collected.

The statistical error of the sample (with a probability of 0.95 and taking into account the design effect of 1.1) does not exceed: 2.4% for indicators close to 50%, 2.1% – for indicators close to 25%, and 1.5% – for indicators close to 10%.

More detailed information on the results of the survey can be found on the Foundation’s website.

As reported, on Thursday, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky registered in the Verkhovna Rada a bill on amending the law "On citizenship of Ukraine" on the basis and procedure for acquiring and terminating citizenship No. 6368 (the text of the bill was published on the parliament’s website).
