Farmers in Romania, Bulgaria protest Ukrainian grain influx
KYIV. April 8 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Farmers in Romania and Bulgaria staged protests Friday to express their anger over the European Union’s response to a glut of agricultural products from Ukraine that they say are flooding local markets and undercutting price,” the Associated Press (AP) reported on Friday.
“Farmers in Romania and Bulgaria staged protests Friday to express their anger over the European Union’s response to a glut of agricultural products from Ukraine that they say are flooding local markets and undercutting prices,” the AP reported
Protests took place in Bucharest and other cities of Romania. In Bulgaria, farmers have blocked several border posts.
“We are less than three months away from the new harvest and the danger is real, that the goods we will have ready this season will not be able to be sold at prices above production costs,” the AP quoted Liliana Piron, executive director of the League of Romanian Agriculture Producers’ Associations, as saying.
In recent weeks, Polish farmers have also staged protests over the EU’s duty-free supplies of Ukrainian grain to European markets, as a result of which Poland’s agriculture minister, Henryk Kowalczyk, had to resign after he became the focus of farmers’ anger.
Last year, the EU abolished customs tariffs for Ukraine for freer grain supplies.
On Monday, the European Commission announced its desire to help the population of Ukraine by organizing the export of Ukrainian grain, but it ensures that the EU market does not receive too strong blow from Kyiv’s support measures.
