Cattle numbers in Ukraine decrease by 15.6% over year – Milk Producers Association

KYIV. March 28 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Cattle numbers in Ukraine for the year of the war, as of March 1, 2023, decreased by 15.6% – to 2.409 million animals, including cows – by 15%, to 1.347 million, the Association of Milk Producers said.

According to the association, the number of livestock in the industrial sector decreased most significantly over the year in Zaporizhia (from 53,500 to 6,700), Kharkiv, Sumy and Mykolaiv regions, while there are no data in Donetsk, Luhansk and Kherson regions.

The association adds that in February cattle numbers in the industrial sector of Ukraine, according to preliminary data, increased by 86,100 animals , mainly due to the regions of central and western Ukraine, which suffered little from Russian aggression compared to the areas in the south and east.

“Such a “plus” occurred due to the relocation of enterprises, and does not reflect real losses due to the objective impossibility of a number of regions to provide statistical reports,” the association’s analysts noted.

As of March 1, more than half (52.6%) of the cattle numbers of Ukraine is concentrated in Khmelnytsky (228,100), Vinnytsia (190,800), Poltava (187,800) Ternopil (137,900), Odesa (135,000), Chernihiv (134,600), Cherkasy (128,100), and Zhytomyr (124,500) regions.

As of March 1, 2023, some 936,700 animals are kept in the industrial sector on dairy farms, including 389,900 cows, which is respectively 7.5% and 8.5% less than last year.

Over the year, the largest increase in the number of cattle in the industrial sector was recorded in Zakarpattia (up 18.8%), Ternopil (up 7.9%), Ivano-Frankivsk (up 7%), Kyiv (up 6.1%), Lviv (up 5%), and Khmelnytsky (up 3.1%) regions.
