Europe should buy more in order to increase Russian gas transit via Ukraine – Peskov

MOSCOW. Sept 22 (Interfax) – Russia is close to the all-time high of gas supply to Europe, and an enlargement of gas transit via Ukraine will require larger purchases by European consumers, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

Journalists asked Peskov on Wednesday to comment on a statement by the U.S. Department of State’s Senior Advisor for Energy Security Amos Hochstein who demanded that Russia increase gas transit to Europe via Ukraine.

"I have no doubt that Gazprom and Gazprom specialists will be ready to explain the meaning of current events to Mr. Hochstein and, most importantly, to relay a simple truth: first, gas is sold, then, it is produced, and only then, it is transited. It’s impossible to transit gas without selling it first," Peskov said.

"The Russian side fulfills its obligations to European buyers 100% or even more," he said.

"What’s more, to our knowledge, we are close to the all-time high amount of gas supply to European buyers," Peskov said.

"In order to increase gas deliveries, say after 2024, through Ukraine, it would be necessary to increase the amount of gas purchased by Europe," he said.
