Russia ups wheat exports to Algeria – Rosselkhoznadzor

MOSCOW. Sept 16 (Interfax) – Russia is increasing wheat exports to Algeria after recommencing them this June following a five-year break.

Russia shipped a cargo of wheat of the new harvest weighing over 30,000 tonnes from the port of Taman to Algeria for state grain importer OAIC last week, the Russian Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance (Rosselkhoznadzor) said in a statement.

"The qualitative characteristics of the grain, which fully meet the requirements of this country, where confirmed by specialists of the Novorossiysk branch of the service-controlled agency FSI Center for Grain Quality Assurance," the statement said.

Another vessel is currently ready for loading at the port of Taman to export another cargo of wheat to Algeria.

Rosselkhoznadzor clarified that in the last marketing year, Russia had exported 79,000 tonnes of grain and grain products to Algeria, including barley, wheat, chickpeas, flaxseed, oat and buckwheat flakes, and millet.

As reported, wheat supplies from Russia to Algeria became possible after the OAIC permitted grain with a level of shield bug damage of 0.5% for delivery. Previously, a limit of 0.1% was in place.

Algeria’s potential for wheat imports is estimated at 7 million tonnes, Rosselkhoznadzor said.
