Energoatom plans to send first batches of fuel to centralized storage facility in 2023 – company head

YUZHNOUKRAINSK. Jan 17 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Energoatom plans this year to start exporting the first batches of spent nuclear fuel to the centralized storage facility, company president Petro Kotin said.

"We are in the planned export schedule and are planning such export. It will be carried out as it is necessary for nuclear power plants. All issues regarding nuclear power plants have been resolved. We will export this year," he said at a briefing at Pivdennoukrainsk nuclear power plant.

At the same time, Kotin noted that Energoatom takes into account all the risks of transporting fuel in connection with the martial law in the country.

"Now martial law is in effect, and nuclear fuel transportation through the territory of Ukraine is dangerous. We also take into account this additional factor and will take it out as necessary to make it safe. We will need to take it out, and we are doing everything to ensure safe export," Kotin emphasized.

As reported, at the end of April 2022, Energoatom received a special permit from the State Nuclear Regulatory Commission to put the centralized storage facility for spent nuclear fuel into operation.
