Renewables potential in Azerbaijan reaches almost 200 GW – Aliyev
BAKU. Jan 16 (Interfax) – The potential of renewable energy sources in Azerbaijan has been estimated at almost 200 gigawatts, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said.
"On land, there is a potential of 27 GW of wind and solar energy, 10 GW of wind and solar energy in territories liberated during the Patriotic War of 2020 [Karabakh and East Zangezur], and 157 GW of wind energy in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea. That is, there is a potential of almost 200 GW on the whole," Aliyev said on Monday at Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week.
Aliyev noted the need to have enough export routes to supply electricity abroad. Such projects are being implemented in the country gradually, he said.
"Azerbaijan will become a serious exporter of green energy" thanks to Azerbaijani cooperation with UAE company Masdar, Aliyev said.
"Yesterday [Sunday], Masdar and SOCAR [State Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic] signed an agreement on developing wind and solar plants in Azerbaijan with a capacity of 4 GW. That’s just one short-term project. Medium-terms projects allow for increasing this volume to 10 GW. It’s absolutely doable. We have a roadmap for both projects," Aliyev said.
Memorandums of understanding and agreements signed with international energy companies will allow Azerbaijan to produce a total of up to 22 GW of wind and solar energy, he said.
