Eleven mln sq m of land in Ukraine littered with ammunition in 10 months of war – State Environmental Inspectorate

KYIV. Jan 16 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The full-scale Russian military invasion in 10 months led to the contamination of 11.08 million square meters of Ukrainian lands with the remains of destroyed objects and ordinance, and 280,130 square meters of soil is contaminated with hazardous substances, the State Environmental Inspectorate of Ukraine (SEI) has said.

"February 24 changed the life of every Ukrainian to "before" and "after". In addition to economic, infrastructural, humanitarian and social disasters, SEI specialists calculated large-scale environmental changes that have an extremely negative impact on the environment not only in Ukraine, but throughout Europe as a whole," the inspectorate wrote in its Telegram channel on Monday.

In addition, during the 10 months of the war, Russian aggression led to the combustion of 686,100 tonnes of oil products during shelling, which led to air pollution with hazardous substances.

"Some 59,150 hectares of forests and other plantations were burned by missiles and rounds, some of them will be renewed within a decade, and it is the most optimistic calculations, the rest are lost forever. Some 979,100 square meters of objects, including critical infrastructure, have been destroyed, their remnants have harmed the environment," the inspectorate said.

The SEI said that 1,570 tonnes of pollutants, 932,600 tonnes of foreign objects, materials and wastes got into the water bodies of Ukraine during the war. In addition, the Russians arbitrarily took and used 410.15 million cubic meters of water, mainly through the North Crimean Canal.

As reported with reference to the SEI data, the Russian invasion as of November 30, 2022 caused damage to the country’s soils totaling UAH 448.9 billion. As a result of Russian armed aggression, 809,970 hectares of the country’s soils are contaminated with waste, remnants of ammunition and destroyed equipment, and 29,180 hectares are contaminated with harmful substances.
