Ukraine in partnership with USA launches pilot project to introduce small modular reactors
KYIV. Nov 14 (Interfax-Ukraine) – U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry and Ukrainian Energy Minister Herman Haluschenko announced the start of a pilot project to introduce small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs) in Ukraine, the U.S. Department of State said on its website.
The project aims to demonstrate Ukraine’s innovative clean energy leadership through the use of advanced technologies.
According to the press release, the Ukraine Clean Fuels from SMRs Pilot project will demonstrate production of clean hydrogen and ammonia using secure and safe SMRs and cutting-edge electrolysis technologies in Ukraine.
The project aims to carry out a first-of-a-kind pilot of commercial-scale production of clean fuels from SMRs using solid oxide electrolysis.
In addition, the project seeks to support Ukraine’s energy security goals, enable decarbonization of hard-to-abate energy sectors through clean hydrogen generation, and improve long-term food security through clean ammonia-produced fertilizers.
Kerry, for his part, said on Twitter that Putin’s unprovoked and brutal invasion of Ukraine will require rebuilding even stronger.
"Honored to join Herman Haluschenko (Ukrainian Energy Minister), Laura Holgate (U.S. Ambassador to the Vienna Office of the United Nations) and U.S. developers NuScale Power and TerraPower to announce US support for nuclear-to-hydrogen and deployment of SMRs to replace coal plants in Ukraine and Europe," Kerry wrote.
Participating partners for the pilot include a multinational consortium from Argonne National Laboratory, National Nuclear Generating Company Energoatom, National Security and Defense Council, and State Scientific and Technical Center for Nuclear and Radiation Safety, and private companies Clark Seed, Doosan Enerbility, FuelCell Energy, IHI Corporation, JGC Corporation, NuScale Power, Samsung C&T, and Starfire Energy.
As reported, Energoatom and NuScale in September 2021 signed a memorandum of cooperation to build SMRs in Ukraine.
