IAEA promises Armenia to support project to build new nuclear unit

YEREVAN. Oct 5 (Interfax) – Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturyan and International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi discussed project work to build a new nuclear power unit in the country.

Khachaturyan hosted Grossi on Wednesday, the Armenian presidential press service said.

"President Khachaturyan especially emphasized the importance of cooperation between the Armenian government and the IAEA, which is necessary from the point of view of ensuring Armenia’s energy and nuclear security. Rafael Mariano Grossi said the agency he heads is ready to support Armenia in developing security systems and digital technologies and strategy development. The meeting addressed project work to build a new nuclear power unit in Armenia and the need to train young and professional specialists. The IAEA director general emphasized that Armenia can always count on the support from the IAEA," the report said.

The meeting participants reached an agreement to continue cooperation, including on providing expert consultations and comprehensive support.

The IAEA director general arrived in Yerevan at the invitation of Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan.

In summer 2022, specialists from Armenia and Russia began talks on a project to build a new nuclear power unit in Armenia. In particular, a standard VVER power unit with a capacity of 1-1.3 gigawatts is under consideration.

In October 2021, Armenian Territorial Management and Infrastructure Minister Gnel Sanosyan said Armenia planned to begin the construction of a new nuclear power plant in 2026-2027. Armenia plans to start operating the new nuclear power plant after the current plant discontinues operation in 2036, he said.

The Armenian Nuclear Power Plant is now one of the main sources of electrical power in the country. The plant has one unit (with a VVER-440 first-generation reactor). Fuel is supplied to it by TVEL.
