Kazakh ammo depot blast's death toll rises to 12 – Emergency Situations Ministry
NUR-SULTAN. Aug 27 (Interfax) – The bodies of three more persons who were killed while dealing with the aftermath of the blasts in the Zhambyl region of southern Kazakhstan have been found at the incident scene, the press service for the Kazakh Emergency Ministry said.
"According to updated information, […] the bodies of another three employees who were killed while dealing with the aftermath of the explosions have been found. The employees are being identified. The explosion’s death toll has reached 12 people," the press service said.
According to the ministry, about 50 employees of the Emergency Situations Ministry sustained various injuries.
It was reported earlier that nine people were killed.
A fire at an ammo depot of the Kazakh Defense Ministry’s engineering and sapper brigade in the Zhambyl region was reported on Thursday evening. In all, there were about ten explosions of engineering munitions. The fire spread onto almost 700 square meters. The Emergency Situations Ministry said the depot was storing over 500 tonnes of TNT.
Rescue workers, servicemen and prosecutors were killed while dealing with the aftermath of the explosions and fire at the depot.
About 1,200 people from nearby populated localities have been evacuated to Taraz.
According to medics, 93 people were injured as a result of the incident.
