Zelensky's speech at UN General Assembly one of most anticipated, powerful – Yermak

KYIV. Sept 28 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The speech of President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky at the UN General Assembly was one of the most anticipated and had a powerful effect, head of the President’s office Andriy Yermak quotes the press service of the head of state.

"There was a lot of attention [to the speech of the President of Ukraine at the General Assembly session]. We received a lot of messages and calls: from the U.S. State Department, from the White House, from European partners, with very warm words of support and impressions of the president’s speech. This had a very powerful effect," Yermak said on the air of the Freedom of Speech (Svoboda Slova) program on ICTV.

According to him, Zelensky in his speech emphasized the need to reform the UN.

"President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, during his speech at the debates of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly, called for reforming the United Nations in order to increase its effectiveness, because this issue has long been ripe," the message says.

"The President said that the worst thing is if the UN turns into the League of Nations or ‘a retired superhero’. Today, the challenges to the world community are such that it is very important to change things like the abuse of the veto, which we have seen in recent years, as the fact that there is no equality between countries. Those values and ideology with which the UN was created must return to its walls," Andriy Yermak said.

The head of the president’s office said that it was very important for the residents of the occupied Crimea to hear from the rostrum of the UN General Assembly the words of the head of state about the need to de-occupy the peninsula. Yermak noted that Ukraine is awaiting the signing of the declaration of the Crimea Platform summit by the UN.

"We know how successful and powerful the summit of the Crimea Platform was, how many delegations were there. The signature of the United Nations has not yet appeared, but the right to sign it is open, and I think that over time there will be more participants and signatories to the declaration," he said.

Andriy Yermak also said that in New York the president held a number of bilateral meetings with world leaders, during which he raised the issue of the release of illegally detained Ukrainian citizens and the de-occupation of the territories of Ukraine.

"During these meetings, the issues of the occupied territories were discussed, a lot was said about the list of prisoners, which was handed over to everyone with whom these meetings were held," the head of the President’s office said.
