Zelensky welcomes McCarthy on his election as Speaker of US House of Representatives
KYIV. Jan 7 (Interfax-Ukraine) – President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky has welcomed Republican Kevin McCarthy on his election as Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives.
"congratulations to Kevin McCarthy on his election as the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives. U.S. support in all fields has been vital to Ukraine’s success on the battlefield. We’re counting on your continued support and further U.S. assistance to bring our common victory closer," Zelensky said on Twitter.
As reported, the U.S. House of Representatives elected the speaker on the 15th attempt. Republican Congressman Kevin McCarthy, 57, received 216 votes to 212 for Democrat Hakim Jeffreys. A total of 428 votes were cast.
According to media statements, this is the first time since 1923 that a candidate was not nominated on the first try.
