Zelensky urges 'reanimation' of UN Charter for sake of unity, ensuring equality of rights of all peoples
KYIV. Sept 23 (Interfax-Ukraine) – President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky has urged to reanimate the Charter of the United Nations (UN) for the sake of unity and ensuring the equality of rights of all peoples.
"You will not find there [in the Charter] the words ‘every man for himself.’ And then the world would not have to admit that he failed the test of unity," Zelensky said, speaking at the 76th session of the UN General Assembly.
"Who could have imagined that someday drugs would become a means of discrimination. In the context of constant talk about the global food crisis, I wonder if we will ever share bread and water in the same way?" Zelensky said.
The president called the guarantees that there will be no new viruses in the world as "strong" as the security guarantees of the Budapest Memorandum.
Truth is needed to reanimate the UN, he said. He believes that support for the peace efforts of the world community could prevent a crisis in Afghanistan.
"Our servicemen evacuated over 700 people. These are citizens of Ukraine, as well as citizens of other states, members of human rights organizations, journalists. This is dedication to the basic principles of the UN," Zelensky said.
"You and I, which means the UN, just need to believe in ourselves again. The UN hears only criticism for a long time. Accusations that the UN can do nothing. The worst thing is that the UN has become the League of Nations," the president said.
Zelensky called on the leaders of the UN member states to show that "we are determined to do our best to enhance our interaction. Let us show and just do it. Even without resolutions, declarations, coordination of positions. We will just do it," the head of state said, adding: "like the United Nations, which made their choice. Either their actions will be filled with content, or these chairs will be empty."
