Zelensky on anniversary of An-26 plane crash near Chuhuiv: Ukraine will always remember its heroes

KYIV. Sept 25 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Ukraine will always remember its heroes, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on the anniversary of the plane crash near Chuhuiv, when 26 people died.

"A year ago, as a result of the plane crash near Chuhuiv, Ukraine lost 26 worthy sons. They had a lifetime ahead of them and more than one military victory. It is impossible to relieve the pain of this loss. Sincere condolences to the families and friends of the fallen soldiers. Ukraine will always remember its heroes," Zelensky wrote on the Telegram channel on Saturday.

As reported, the An-26 plane crashed on the Kyiv-Kharkiv-Dovzhansky highway, not far from Chuhuiv at about 20:50 on September 25. The plane crash happened when the aircraft was landing at the airfield of a military unit in the town of Chuhuiv, Kharkiv region. There were 27 people (20 cadets and seven officers of Kharkiv University of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine named after Kozhedub) onboard. Some 25 people died instantly, two were hospitalized. On September 26, one of the hospitalized cadets died.

Law enforcement agencies notified six persons of the suspicion: the former head of the Kharkiv National University of the Air Force named after I. Kozhedub, commander of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, commander of military unit A4104 in the town of Chuhuiv, two of his deputies, as well as the head of flights, who controlled flights on the day of the tragedy, September 25, 2020.

On May 13, 2021, head of the investigative department of the State Bureau of Investigations (SBI) of Ukraine, Vadym Prymachok, said that the involvement of six suspects in the fall of the An-26 plane near Chuhuiv was confirmed.

The head of the investigative department of the SBI pointed out that the main reason for the fall of the An-26 plane was permission to take off by conveyor belt method.

"The most important reason for the tragedy is the unlawful permission by the head of flights at the Chuhuiv airfield for takeoffs of the indicated aircraft by conveyor belt method. Such permission took place during the last four flights before the tragedy, which, in fact, led to the fact that during the approach to the last takeoff, when a breakdown of the PRT-24 system was revealed, which indicated the incorrect operation of the left engine, but due to the conveyor belt, this breakdown could not be detected by the crew in a timely manner," Pryimachok said.
