Zelensky meets with President of 76th UNGA session Shahid

KYIV. Sept 22 (Interfax-Ukraine) – During his working visit to the United States, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky met with President of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Maldives Abdullah Shahid, at which they discussed issues of close cooperation in the field of security.

According to the press service of the Ukrainian president, the head of state noted Ukraine’s readiness to effectively cooperate in implementing the priorities of the president of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly and to strengthen the role of the General Assembly as the most representative political body in the world.

"We also count on close cooperation on security issues that are important for our state and region, which should remain a priority in the work of the General Assembly," Zelensky said.

In this regard, he emphasized that for Ukraine, the key priority within the UN framework is the counteraction of Russian aggression and the restoration of territorial integrity, the de-occupation of Donbas and Crimea.

"It is important for Ukraine that during the 76th session of the General Assembly, under your chairmanship, the member states hold full-fledged debates within the framework of the Ukrainian item ‘The situation in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine,’" the head of state said.

Zelensky briefed the President of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly with the results of the Crimea Platform summit and emphasized that achieving the ultimate goal of this initiative – the return of Crimea – is a way to restore respect for the UN Charter.

He noted the importance of the adoption at the plenary session of two resolutions of the General Assembly, which Ukraine, together with partners, plans to submit for consideration: "The human rights situation in the occupied Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol, Ukraine" and "The problem of militarization of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol, Ukraine, as well as parts of the Black and Azov seas."

"These documents are a practical tool for protecting human rights in the occupied territory and preventing the further transformation of Crimea into a military base with nuclear weapons – a direct threat to global security," the President of Ukraine noted.

The head of state also informed about the holding of the Kyiv summit of first ladies and gentlemen.
