Zelensky instructs to consider issue of increasing prison term for smugglers to 20 years – Danilov

KYIV. Oct 16 (Interfax-Ukraine) – During a regular meeting of the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) on Friday, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky ordered to consider increasing the prison term for smugglers to 20 years, NSDC Secretary Oleksiy Danilov has aid.

"The president insists that the issue of when people for such crimes [smuggling] should be sent to prison for such crimes should be resolved. Today we have excessively liberal legislation. The president [at the NSDC meeting] gave instructions that it is necessary at the legislative level to urgently consider the issue of how to make sure that [smugglers] are sent to prisons. Moreover, 20 years should be given for this," Danilov told the journalist during the break of the Svoboda Slova (Freedom of Speech) by Savik Shuster television program on Friday.

He also said the issue of smugglers is under the control of the president.

"Representatives of the President’s Office next week will hold appropriate meetings with the head of customs, the Finance Minister, the head of the State Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), representatives of the NSDC staff. The issue of strengthening the staff potential of the work of the Ukrainian customs will be discussed there," Danilov said.

"Some persons will lose their positions," he said.
