Zelensky expects aid from Germany on Ukraine’s future membership in EU, NATO
KYIV. Jan 28 (Interfax-Ukraine) – President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, speaking with representatives of foreign media, said that he expects assistance from Germany regarding Ukraine’s future membership in the EU and NATO amid blocking the supply of weapons to Ukraine.
He preliminarily said that Germany supported Ukraine on the path of implementing reforms in the Normandy format as well. In particular, according to him, former Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel made a lot of efforts for a peaceful settlement of the situation in the east.
“I believe that a lot of things depend on Germany, this is consolidation in the Alliance, and regarding support for Ukraine, and regarding the future membership of Ukraine in the EU. Germany has a serious influence on the countries of the European Union… And therefore we expect that you [Germany] help us in such areas,” Zelensky said.
Commenting on Germany’s blocking arms supplies to Ukraine, the head of state said that “this is not the first and not the last example, but timely assistance is important.”
“As for weapons: it is very important to help when it is needed. This is a serious signal, a challenge. I do not wish Germany and its people to feel what we feel. So that you once feel it on the borders of your state. And I once told Angela Merkel about Nord Stream 2, when we started fighting it, that I understand that this is a business, a serious process. I said if you had troops on the border [of Russia], just wondering, would you construct Nord Stream 2 with them or not? Where is this contact line between business and reality? I do not wish you what we have on our borders. But know, if it happens, we will definitely help you,” Zelensky said.
