Work on 'Strategy of Maritime Security of Ukraine' draft completed – Defense Ministry

KYIV. Dec 8 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The interdepartmental working group has completed the work on the draft "Strategy of Ukraine’s Maritime Security", the website of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine has reported.

According to the report, the project was initiated by President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky and presented at a meeting of the working group chaired by Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) Oleksiy Danilov on Tuesday.

"The strategy was developed on the basis of the modern experience of the leading maritime states of the world, the positions of scientists on the law of the sea. It takes into account the proposals of 16 government agencies, public experts and business associations. The strategy includes a mechanism for its implementation, coordination and control, specific quantitative and qualitative indicators, its implementation is proposed to be entrusted to the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine. One of the main goals of the Strategy is to turn Ukraine into an active maritime player in the international arena," the statement says.

During the meeting, it was noted that the problems associated with the development of Ukraine as a maritime state were not solved comprehensively due to a number of external and internal factors. In addition to the aggressive policy of the Russian Federation in the Black Sea region, among the main threats to Ukraine’s maritime security, the draft Strategy indicates the insufficient effectiveness of the subjects of ensuring maritime security and the lack of an appropriate level of domestic coordination, the decline of the maritime industry and inland water transport, the report says.
