We need to make sure new U.S. sanctions change Putin's behavior – General Breedlove
KYIV. Dec 8 (Interfax-Ukraine) – We need to make sure that the new U.S. sanctions against Russia will change the behavior of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Supreme Commander of the Allied NATO Forces in Europe in 2013-2016 General Philip Breedlove said.
"In the past, we only imposed economic sanctions on Russia, and although these sanctions did not affect Russia in any way, it is clear that these sanctions did not change Mr. Putin’s behavior. If we are going to apply economic sanctions again, we need to make sure this time that we can use sanctions that change behavior," Breedlove said during a discussion at the Kyiv Security Forum on Tuesday.
He said that it is necessary to use more instruments than just economic sanctions.
"Since we have already discussed economic sanctions, military options remain. I believe that helping the Ukrainians become a more difficult goal, increasing the price for Mr Putin will be an important step for us and other nations in the West," Breedlove said.
The general noted that Ukraine needs help with air defense and defense against drones.
