War in Ukraine kills at least 5,500 civilians, 7,700 more wounded – UN

KYIV. Aug 16 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Civilian casualties from February 24, when Russia launched a war against Ukraine, to August 14 amounted to 13,212 civilians (some 12,867 a week earlier), including 5,514 killed (5,401), the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights ( OHCHR) has said on Monday, August 15.

"Most of the civilian casualties recorded were caused by the use of explosive weapons with wide area effects, including shelling from heavy artillery, multiple launch rocket systems, missiles and air strikes," the UN said in the document.

This concerns, for example, Mariupol (Donetsk region), Izium (Kharkiv region), Lysychansk, Popasna, and Sievierodonetsk (Luhansk region), where there are allegations of numerous civilian casualties.

According to confirmed UN data, some 2,125 men, some 1,451 women, some 170 boys and 147 girls killed, while the gender of 39 children and 1,582 adults has not yet been determined.

Among the 7,698 wounded were 231 boys and 164 girls, as well as 200 children whose gender has not yet been determined.

Compared to July 31, one child killed and another 15 were wounded.

If earlier the OHCHR report on the number of casualties was published daily, and then only on weekdays, since July it has become a weekly one. In this report, as in the previous one, data are also given by months.

According to them, March remains the deadliest month for civilians, with a minimum of 3,169 deaths. In April, according to an OHCHR publication, the number of civilian deaths due to the war fell to 675; while to 458 in May; and to 144 in two weeks of August, the UN said.

However, the number of wounded in July – some 1,099 was higher than in June and May some 1,029 and 1,013, respectively, but lower than in April and March, some 1,254 and 2,400, respectively.

According to the statement, in the first two weeks of August, some 142 people were killed and 410 injured by explosive weapons with a wide area of effect, while mines and explosive remnants of war killed two and injured 31 people (6% of the total casualties).

The summary traditionally states that the increase in the figures from the previous report should not be attributed only to cases after August 8, since during this period the office verified a number of cases from previous days.
