Vinnikov on Ukraine's NATO membership: It will strengthen Alliance security
KYIV. Aug 31 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Head of the NATO office in Ukraine Alexander Vinnikov has said that the North Atlantic Treaty does not have such a provision that would not allow the entry of a country during a war on its territory.
"There is no such provision in the NATO Washington Treaty. However, in the end, the allies must be convinced that the entry of a new member will strengthen the security of the Alliance. That is why this decision is taken collectively," Vinnikov said in an interview with the European Truth Internet publication.
He also said the Alliance is interested in the aggressive actions of Russia remaining a red line for NATO.
In addition, the ambassador told how NATO can help Ukraine restore territorial integrity and control over territorial waters.
"As for practical steps, after the Russian aggression, we have significantly increased our presence in the Black Sea. More ships, more aircraft flights, NATO forces are deployed in Romania, NATO ships are entering Ukrainian ports, we are conducting joint exercises. The current Sea Breeze is the largest in history, more than 30 countries took part in it. All these are clear, concrete steps of solidarity and support, which we plan to continue," Vinnikov said.
