Verkhovna Rada improves Criminal Procedure Code for effective work of ICC representatives

KYIV. Sept 20 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has improved the provisions of the Criminal Procedure Code in order to ensure effective investigation by the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) into war crimes in the territory of Ukraine, crimes against humanity and genocide.

Some 331 Ukrainian MPs voted in favor of the adoption of respective bill No. 7728 on amendments to the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine to improve cooperation with the International Criminal Court in conducting proceedings on the territory of Ukraine, MP Yaroslav Zhelezniak (the Holos faction) said on the Telegram channel on Tuesday.

The bill provides for a mechanism for the Prosecutor General (Acting Prosecutor General) to agree on the procedure and list of persons of the Office of the Prosecutor of the ICC who will conduct legal proceedings in the territory of Ukraine.

These amendments will make it possible to carry out proceedings in the territory of Ukraine not only to the prosecutor of the ICC, but also to persons delegated by the prosecutor in line with the Rome Statute.
