Verkhovna Rada adopts European integration law on official statistics

KYIV. Aug 16 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The Verkhovna Rada has adopted, at the initiative of the government of Ukraine, law No. 5886 on the official statistics, which is aimed at streamlining the Ukrainian state statistics with the EU statistics system. Some 255 MPs voted in favor of the document on Tuesday, according to a statement on the parliament’s website.

"The adoption of the law creates the proper legal conditions for fulfilling the obligations stipulated by the Ukraine-EU Association Agreement and streamlining the state statistical activities with the requirements of the European Statistical System," Minister of the Cabinet of Ministers Oleh Nemchinov said on the Telegram channel.

He also said that the bill was developed on the basis of the EU framework regulation on statistics, international principles of official statistics and taking into account national characteristics.

Nemchinov stressed that, according to the European principles, statistics should be developed and issued by the national statistics authorities independently of other governing bodies, especially in terms of determining the methodology, methods and sources of data, terms, content, forms of information spreading, etc.

According to the explanatory note to the bill, the document takes into account the creation of the National Council for Statistics, which will consist of 15-20 representatives of important stakeholders and provide advice and comments on statistical issues, which should increase the effectiveness of the statistical system.
