USA trying to prevent attempts of Wagner PMC to conduct operations outside Ukraine – ISW
KYIV. Jan 27 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The U.S. Treasury Department has imposed sanctions against 16 organizations supporting the activities of the Russian PMC Wagner, according to a report by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) for January 26.
“The announcement of secondary sanctions on specified entities outside of Russia and the focus on the Wagner Group’s activities in the Sahel suggests that the US Treasury Department is in part trying to constrain the Wagner Group’s likely renewed focus on conducting operations outside of Ukraine,” the message reads.
Analysts note that the United States recognized the private military company as an international criminal organization, pointing to its role in Russia’s operations in Ukraine and involvement in crimes in the Central African Republic (CAR) and Mali.
The ISW believes that the Wagner PMC is currently making attempts to regain influence in African countries, including restoring the positions and roles on which it focused considerable attention before taking part in the invasion of the Russian Federation on the territory of Ukraine.
