USA delivers Excalibur high-precision artillery shells to Ukraine – media

KYIV. Sept 8 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The United States has sent Ukraine its most accurate artillery shell, the GPS-guided Excalibur, according to budget documents that confirm the previously unannounced addition to the arsenal assembled to combat the Russian invasion, Bloomberg reported on Thursday.

A satellite-guided weapon can hit within two meters of its target. It has a range of 40.5 kilometers. The shells are used in 155mm howitzers.

According to the documents, the Defense Department will spend $92 million in congressionally approved supplemental funds "for procurement of replacement M982 Excalibur munitions transferred to Ukraine in support of the international effort to counter Russian aggression."

Bloomberg said that these shells appear in the Additional Ukraine Supplemental act signed in May by U.S. President Joe Biden providing more than $40 billion in emergency funding. The Pentagon’s portion amounted to at least $20 billion, including $6 billion for Ukraine assistance and equipment and $9 billion to replenish U.S. equipment stocks.

Bloomberg said that, in addition to the previously undisclosed Excalibur, the budget documents also spell out supplies of well-known items such as conventional 155mm artillery rounds, Javelin anti-armor and Stinger anti-air missiles, the HIMARS mobile rocket system and its Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System, or GMLRS, missiles. There are also smaller purchases of MK-19 grenade launchers, "precision sniper rifles" and "spotting scopes" and "replacement battery coolant units" for Stingers.
