US Secretary of State calls on Russia for diplomacy to resolve crisis around Ukraine
STOCKHOLM. Dec 2 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The best way to resolve the crisis around Ukraine is diplomacy, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Thursday at the beginning of talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
"President Biden shared with President Putin when they met in Geneva some months ago the strong preference of the United States for a stable, predictable relationship between our countries. It is in the best interests of both of us – of our people, and actually, the entire world. But, as we have made very clear in recent weeks, we have deep concerns about Russia’s plans for renewed aggression against Ukraine. That would move us in exactly the opposite direction, and it is simply not in anyone’s interest," Blinken said.
He said that "that is not just our concern."
"It is a concern that is shared by many in Europe, and I think Sergey [Lavrov] has heard that expressed over the last 24 hours here in Stockholm. We have a strong, ironclad commitment to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine," the U.S. Secretary of State said.
Blinken said this is what he plans to discuss with his Russian counterpart.
The U.S. Secretary of State also noted the importance of the parties fulfilling the Minsk agreements "the best way to avert a crisis is through diplomacy, full implementation of the Minsk agreements, with Russia pulling back its forces."
"If Russia decides to pursue confrontation, there will be serious consequences," he said.
