US expects to charge Ukrainian, Russian over cyberattack – media
WASHINGTON. Nov 8 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The U.S. Justice Department is expected to announce later on Monday that Russian citizen Yevgeny Polyanin and Ukrainian citizen Yaroslav Vasinsky were charged with cybercriminals, CNN said, citing sources.
In particular, they are being charged with conspiracy to commit fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering.
Vasinsky, 22 years old, is been held in Poland pending U.S. extradition proceedings, while Polyanin, 28 years old, remains at large, CNN said. Presumably, these men are part of the REvil hacker group, which was behind a major attack on the U.S. company in July 2021.
In addition, the Justice Department is expected to announce the seizure of about $6 million that the extortionists received from their victims after the cyberattack.
