Up to 10 sub-lineages of Delta variant of novel coronavirus seen in Russia – Rospotrebnadzor
MOSCOW. Nov 1 (Interfax) – Up to ten sub-lineages of the Delta variant of the novel coronavirus are currently seen in Russia, Vasily Akimkin, head of the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of the Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection and Human Wellbeing (Rospotrebnadzor), said.
"Besides the prevailing so-called main, basic Delta variant, we have seen up to ten sub-lineages in constituent territories and federal districts in the territory of Russia over recent months," Akimkin said at a scientific and practical congress with the theme "Topical Aspects of the State Sanitary and Epidemiological Control in the Russian Armed Forces" on Monday.
As of this date, up to 40 Delta variant sub-lineages have been added to the international database, he said.
The Delta variant has been imported into Russia and currently prevails in the Russian territory, while its sub-lineages are not common in Russia so far, Akimkin said.
It was obvious from the beginning that this coronavirus variant is not homogenous and tends to mutate, he said.
