UN General Assembly third committee approves draft of new resolution on Crimea – Ukrainian MFA
KYIV. Nov 17 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The third committee of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly approved the draft updated resolution "The situation with human rights in the temporarily occupied Autonomous Republic of Crimea and Sevastopol, Ukraine" on Wednesday, November 17, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine said.
"We welcome the approval of the project of an updated Crimean resolution in the Third Committee of the UN General Assembly. We are grateful to the UN member states that have become co-author and voted for this document. Approval of this resolution on the UN General Assembly in December will enable further consolidate the international support of Ukraine in the way of restoring our territorial integrity," Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba said.
Kuleba said that Ukrainian diplomats will continue to consolidate international pressure on Russia to accelerate the de-occupation of Crimea.
The key innovations of resolution 2021 were reflected in the title of the resolution of the status of the Crimea as a temporarily occupied peninsula, support for cooperation in the Crimea Platform, focusing on Russia’s responsibility for respecting the rights of the Crimean Tatars as the indigenous people of the Crimea, the requirement to overturn the verdicts for the leaders of the Crimean Tatar people.
The document encourages Russia to stop unfounded arrests and arrests of the inhabitants of Crimea, demands to free the Ukrainian citizens illegally held behind bars, in particular, Emir-Usain Kuku, Galina Dolgun, Server Mustafaev, Vladyslav Yesypenko, Nariman Dzhelyal and others.
According to the draft resolution, the increase in military grouping in the temporarily occupied Crimea and numerous teachings of the Russian armed forces entail significant long-term negative consequences in the region, in particular, make it difficult to ensure the fundamental rights of the civilian population.
The document notes the exceptional responsibility of Russia as the occupant state in providing residents of Crimea with drinking and fresh water.
The document condemns the illegal actions of Russia for the destruction or displacement of the cultural and natural values of Ukraine located in the Crimea. The international community states that the purpose of these actions is the targeted crossing of the Ukrainian and Crimean Tatar cultural identity on the ethnic and cultural landscape of the peninsula.
