Ukrenergo first certifies energy storage system at Zaporizhia TPP

KYIV. Sept 24 (Interfax-Ukraine) – NPC Ukrenergo has certified the battery energy storage system (BESS) at the Zaporizhia TPP (PJSC DTEK Dniproenergo) with a capacity of ± 1 MW to participate in the market of ancillary services, the company reported on its website on Friday.

"For the first time in Ukraine, the battery energy storage system (BESS) installed at the Zaporizhia TPP will be able to provide a Frequency Containment Reserve (FCR) of ± 1 MW. Tests have shown that the BESS meets the requirements for ancillary services enshrined in the Transmission System Code," the company said.

As reported, the DTEK energy holding launched the first in Ukraine industrial solar power station of U.S. Honeywell with a capacity of 1 MW and a capacity of 2.25 MWh at the site of the DTEK Zaporizhia TPP power plant in Energodar on May 20 this year.

""DTEK’s battery energy storage system has successfully passed market participation tests by TSO NPC Ukrenergo. This is the first time in the history of Ukraine’s energy industry that certification of the battery has been conducted, and this is the first lithium-ion battery in Ukraine that ensures grid resilience," DTEK Chief Innovation Officer Emanuele Volpe said.

According to him, Ukrenergo developed a comprehensive test program in cooperation with DTEK’s team. It includes testing the battery’s ability to carry on load, check frequency oscillation response, and response time to incidents when the grid frequency goes beyond the nominal value.

"Test proved that the battery can change power from zero to full load in less than 0.6 seconds. This is 50 times faster than required by the Grid Code. Battery’s response time to the grid frequency events is 0.1 seconds," he said.

In turn, DTEK Energy CEO Ildar Salieiev called the certification of the first ESS in Ukraine an important event.

"Before that, TPPs were one of the main maneuvering capacities, now in many countries they have already been replaced by ESS with their clean energy and fast response. Therefore, for us, certification of the battery is another step on the path of great changes," Salieiev said.

According to NPC Ukrenergo, in the trade zone of the Integrated Power System (IPS) of Ukraine, 18 power plants can provide ancillary services to the IPS.
