Ukrenergo activates emergency assistance from Slovakia to avoid shutting down of Burshtyn TPP island consumers

KYIV. Sept 16 (Energy Reform) – On September 14, the dispatch center of NPC Ukrenergo activated emergency assistance from the power system of Slovakia to ensure safety and avoid shutting down of consumers of the Burshtyn TPP energy island due to an accident at its power unit No. 1.

According to a post on the system operator’s website on Wednesday, the amount of assistance provided from 11:00 on September 14 to 1:00 on September 15 amounted to 1,200 MWh.

Ukrenergo noted that unit No. 1 was shut down due to a crack on the boiler at 10:40 on Tuesday, and unit No. 8 was also unloaded. Prior to that, at 5:01, unit No. 5 was also shut down because of a crack, and units Nos. 12 and 10 because of other emergency reasons.

Previously, in order to compensate for the lost power, the dispatcher on September 14 gave a command to load Kalush combined heat and power plant (CHPP), but it was also turned off at 10:00 on Tuesday due to a defect in the steam damper, the operator explained.

At the same time, the company said that on September 14 there was a violation of the schedule of export electricity supplies from the Burshtyn TPP energy island from 5:00 to 7:00 in the amount of 187 MWh, from 10:00 to 11:00 – 45 MWh, and from 21:00 to 24:00 – 95 MWh.

"Starting from 1:00 on September 15, the schedule of export supplies from the Burshtyn TPP energy island has been carried out without violations," Ukrenergo said.

According to the data on the Ukrenergo website, as of Wednesday evening, five power units of the Burshtyn TPP energy island were in operation. Power units Nos. 1,5,6 are in emergency repair, Nos. 3,4 – in the current one, No. 11 – overhauled, and No. 2 – mothballed.

DTEK Burshtyn TPP on its Facebook page in September three times reported on power unit accidents in connection with cracks, pointing out that "this is a frequent phenomenon that power engineers quickly cope with." In addition to the accidents indicated by Ukrenergo, the same accident was announced at power unit No. 1 on September 9.

DTEK reports that the shutdown of the units did not affect the heat and power supply of the Burshtyn TPP energy island.
